AbMat recently launched the Ab Bench Pad, their latest innovation in ab training. Like the company’s original product, the AbMat, it features an arched design that stretches the abs and supports the spine through flexion and extension. But this new version is five inches longer and nearly four inches taller, delivering a deeper stretch on the abs and supporting the spine through a greater range of motion (ROM). It also features a strap that keeps the pad secure on practically any bench, set at any angle, making effective exercises more accessible.

These two enhancements—a larger arch and a strap—move the needle in ab training. Exercises like the decline dumbbell sit-up and incline cable crunch can now be performed more efficiently at longer muscle lengths and through fuller ROMs. This matters because research consistently shows that both factors are key drivers of strength and hypertrophy. Sit-ups and other trunk flexion exercises performed on the floor or bench without an AbMat, Ab Bench Pad or similar arch support restrict the abs from fully lengthening and limit ROM.

Finally in 2025, ab training is beginning to adopt the same effective training techniques applied to all other major muscle groups. There’s still a lot of ground to be covered, but the Ab Bench Pad is a big step in the right direction.

Prior to the Ab Bench Pad, I would use a resistance band to secure my AbMat and a firm Bosu to achieve a deeper stretch.
